With so many genres and options available, picking a new TV series can be hard! However, one of DC’s latest superhero shows is noticed by action and drama fans.
“DC’s Stargirl” is a television series about a teenage girl named Courtney Whitmore, a DC Comics character created by executive producer Geoff Johns.
Courtney and her family move to the seemingly perfect town of Blue Valley, Nebraska. After finding a mysterious glowing staff and an old photo of masked heroes in her family’s new home, Courtney adopts her own superhero identity: Stargirl.
Four Reasons To Watch Stargirl
If you’re not already sold, here are four more reasons you should be watching “Stargirl,” too!
#1. Positive Examples of Leadership
In its exciting action scenes, “Stargirl” gives audiences so many terrific examples of leadership and integrity. As a new student at Blue Valley High School, Courtney recruits her friends to form the new Justice Society of America.
She even convinces her ex-superhero stepdad, Pat Dugan, to join the team. But, unlike most adult action heroes, Courtney also intervenes in interpersonal challenges, like self-esteem, cliques, and bullying.
#2. New Heroes Meet Older DC Classics
While welcoming young new heroes like Yolanda, Beth, and Rick, “Stargirl” also brings more obscure characters from the page onto the screen.
The show’s creative team sought to give context to lesser-known characters like Dr. Ito. Also known as Dragon King, he’s an evil 1940s-era scientist and a member of the Injustice Society.
His daughter Cindy eventually becomes a villain in the comics, but “DC’s Stargirl” showcases her earlier days as the mean girl at Blue Valley High.
#3. The Soundtrack Is a Blast
The show’s expressive pop soundtrack may be reason enough to start watching. In the fourth episode, Hailee Steinfeld’s “Love Myself” plays during the montage showing Yolanda at her happiest, right before her public humiliation.
Cypress Hill’s “Insane in the Brain” is played when Henry learns to use his telekinesis in episode nine. But, again, music plays a powerful role in how the characters’ unique backstories shake out onscreen.
#4. Family-Friendly Fun
Action and drama are front and center, but there are many heartfelt moments between family members. In addition, viewers see a quirky sibling relationship develop between Courtney and her stepbrother Max.
Watching Luke Wilson play the sidekick to his teenage stepdaughter is highly endearing. It’s a role he plays well, with plenty of dad humor on the side.
“DC’s Stargirl” first premiered on DC Universe in May 2020. Not to worry if you have already finished season one. The show has already been renewed for a second season, expected to air in 2021.
