Most Watched Sports Leagues Across The World

Over the years, sports has become an intrinsic fabric of almost every culture. Almost every country in the world has its own national sport or a sport that predominantly all their citizens prefer playing or at least watching.

Based on this, we have prepared a list of matches or leagues which people usually prefer watching. The viewership of all these matches varies depending on the time scale or when they are being aired on TV or other broadcast mediums.

Discussed below is a list of the most watched sports leagues across the world:

Champions League

In order to win the title of being European Champions, a team needs to participate in the annual continental football (soccer) competition. This competition is moderated by the Union of European Football Association wherein the highest ranking teams of all the continent’s premier leagues compete with one another.

The format of the competition is similar to the World Cup where the teams are divided into two groups and the two top teams from each group graduate to the knockout stages. The final 16 teams have to compete against each other in a series of knockout stages until only the champion is left standing.

Formula One

One of the most popular competitions all over the world is the Formula 1 world Championship. This competition comprises of several scheduled races also popularly known as grand prix. All these races are scheduled at different locations around the world.

Every driver is awarded with a specific place and point based on their race which helps them to progress further in the league. Based on the points collected in each race over the course of the season, the racer with highest aggregate of points is crowned the F1 champion.

As a matter of fact, F1 is regarded as the elite single-seater automobile racing competition in the world. This is the fundamental reason why it garners considerable attention. The FIFA World Cup

The FIFA World Cup was founded in the year 1930. This tournament has been held once in every four years since its inception (exceptions include 1942 and 1946 due to WW-2). FIFA stands for Federation of International Football Association.  This competition brings together all the best football (or soccer) teams from across the world to one nation for month filled with action packed heated competition.

There is no doubt that the sport has gained incredible popularity worldwide. You can easily note this through the increasing number of countries participating in the competition. The competition was last held in Russia.

Rugby World Cup

The inception of this sport took place at a private English school in the early 19th century. Over the years, Rugby had evolved to a level that it is considered to be the main sport in many nations around the world.

Rugby is extremely popular in the UK. South Africa, New Zealand, Ireland, France, Argentina and Australia are some other countries where the sport has gained considerable recognition.

Baseball

One of the sports that dominate the Northern American sports culture is- Baseball. This sport holds deep roots within American culture and the very first game of baseball was recorded in Hoboken, New Jersey in the year 1846.

The International Baseball Federation sanctions an international competition called the World Baseball Classic. This is held every four years but until recently it was held every three years. However, this sport has gained recognition in other countries as well. This is the main reason why the World Baseball Classic is more popular and appreciated in other nations. The World Baseball Classic has experienced diminished popularity in recent years primarily due to its elimination from the Olympic Games.

Cricket World Cup

Just like Rugby, cricket is quite popular in several other nations and an estimated 2,000,000,000 viewers every year have been noted to have followed the sport.

Cricket was first hosted in England in 1975. The cricket World Cup successfully brings several nations together under the same roof. The international teams are highly competitive on field and are on cordial terms off field.  The last Cricket World Cup was hosted in 2015 in Australia.
